Menlo School Play

Menlo Gymnasium is a proposed two-story building that abuts the edge of Menlo middle school and the residential district of Menlo California.   Large existing Oaks filter through the site creating a dense canopy that serves as a buffer between the gym and adjacent development.  A 25’ ball wall forms the southern edge of the gymnasium extending into the landscape as a flexible outdoor space.  Thermal paints on the asphalt form strong measured graphic lines for utilizing the vertical ball wall surface--forming a flexible outdoor gym where the students can invent their own games adjacent the ball wall.  The active outdoor space extends up into a wood deck that serves as a passive viewing platform that is protected by an existing canopy of oaks.  This project was designed by J. Lee Sticklew while at SWA Group.
