WEST OAKLAND PLAYGROUND

Located in the industrial landscape of West Oakland, the Bay Community Playground is designed for preschool-aged children for the Bay Community Fellowship and surrounding neighborhood. This project was conceived of as a natural playground, with a single gentle slope ending in a curved landscape seating bench that echoes the energetic and dynamic pattern of play. The curved green ‘bench’ faces three play mounds formed from the balance of on-site cut and fill, covered with a mix of foot-tolerant naturalized grasses and flowering groundcovers. Based on topography, interaction with the earth and inventive play, the mounds rise up from the sloped plane to form intimate spaces on which to perform, relax, run, gather, and play.
